Mere Christianity
CS Lewis' writings have never stopped engaging my mind, challenging my faith, and opening new doors of Christian life and thought. For me the adventure really all began with Mere Christianity. Lewis' clarity and ability to ask questions he know we all have and then provide the answers is like talking to an old friend over a cup of coffee. Although most of the chapters are often only three or four pages long, it would often take me and hour or more to get through as each paragraph would take my mind in a different direction and lead down paths I hadn't travelled in years.
Lewis begins at the beginning of all questions with human nature, why do we do what we do? Why are we spiritual at all? Lewis suggests that we are spiritual being because we inherently "know" right from wrong? But since this standard against which we judge the rightness of an action cannot be within us, Lewis knows that this standard is greater and separate from us. This standard takes sides and judges our action and mostly likely dislikes most of what we do. And so the journey to find Christ begins.
I've tried to read Mere Christianity at least once a year to discover again the place where my faith is rooted, in reality of Christ's existence and my own need to go farther and deeper. If you haven't taken this journey with Lewis, I strongly encourage you to do so, but I also recommend you do it with a group of people. You will find that the company of friends will make the journey so much more rewarding.
Here are some sites to explore while enjoying Mere Christianity:
Mere Christianity study guide: This is probably the most in-depth of the study guides listed here. It's on Scholia.net and includes the same guide in downloadable Word version, too.
Mere Christianity study guide: This is another fairly in-depth study guide. The site provides helpful information on how specifically to use the study guide, including the types of questions that comprise the guide.
Mere Christianity study guide: A succinct yet thoughtful study guide to the book, chapter by chapter. It also serves as a brief outline to the book. I believe this was originally on another website no longer in existence, so I am thankful that it continues to be available.
Mere Christianity reading group guide: You need to scroll down midway down the page to find the study questions for Mere Christianity. Be sure and check out the rest of this site. There's a discussion forum and a Lewis biography page, for example.
Mere Christianity: This is the entire book online.
Outline of Mere Christianity: This can be a helpful framework for study.
