Leadership Development Team
The charge conference elects members for the committee on nominations and leadership development (formerly the nominating committee or committee on lay leadership). This committee or team serves throughout the year to guide the church council or alternative structure on matters regarding the leadership of the congregation (other than employed staff). Members of this committee must be sensitive to the leadership needs of the congregation and know the capabilities, gifts, skills and experience of the persons in the congregation. This committee's work will affect your life in the church, as well as the lives of others. The influence of the persons you recruit for the various tasks in your church will go well beyond the bounds of your congregation. These leaders will be representatives of the body of Christ, you personally and all those who call First United Methodist Church home in the surrounding community. What about NON-Members? A non-member can serve on some committees. Non-members cannot be on the church council, the pastor-parish relations committee, or the committee on nominations and leadership development. The Discipline requires that persons serving on these committees must be members of the local church. Non-members can serve on the board of trustees. ¶ 2524 of the 2008 Book of Discipline, on the membership of the board of trustees, says, "The trustees shall be of legal age as determined by law, and at least two-thirds shall be members of The United Methodist Church...."
