2012 Rules for the Road
Everyone has rules or principles they live by, unfortunately most people don't give them much of a thought. As a result we are often swept away the winds of changing attitudes, fashion and expectations. We all feel pressure to conform and become something different. But unless we know who we are, or who we want to become, we have no resistance against becoming something we never wanted to be.
As the New Year begins I thought I would set down, as best I could, some of the principles and values that determine what I want to be, not necessarily what I do in ever situation. They are goals, desires and ambitions.
ONE – I cannot be angry at you and pray for you at the same time. Prayer kills the seeds of bitterness and resentment.
TWO – I must remember the Three R’s:
Respect for self;
Respect for others; and
Responsibility for all your actions.
THREE – Spend Time alone, feed the soul, connect to the eternal God.
FOUR– Do what you believe is right and honorable. It may not be perceived as such by others and they may even hate you for it, but to do otherwise is to hate yourself above all.
FIVE - God knows my desires, abilities and hangups better than I do. Learning from God how they make you the most special person in the world.
SIX - When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
SEVEN - Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
EIGHT - Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship. Never sacrifice a friend on the altar of "I'm right!"
NINE - When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
TEN - Speak the language of forgiveness and grace because we've all murdered more people than we know. None of us can stand on the moral high ground.
ELEVEN - Avoid people who are brutally honest, they usually just like being brutal.
